New Balance’s SD100 has long been a well-balanced, all-round sprint spike that isn’t too aggressive. That’s why we included it in our best spikes for hurdles guide. Earlier versions turned heads with a sock-style collar that comes up much higher than most spikes, and New Balance has carried that distinctive look through the range.

The current SD100 v5 adds a full-length FuelCell midsole over a six-pin TPU plate and sheds a little weight compared with previous versions. It’s aimed squarely at newer athletes racing from 60m to 400m, and its forgiving plate makes it a comfortable choice for training and hurdles too.

Who it’s for: beginner and developing sprinters who want a comfortable, good-looking spike at a sensible price.
