HOKA brought its trademark cushioning to cross country with the Crescendo XC, and it’s a great entry-level option. In our cross country spikes guide we noted the generous midsole foam gives a plush feel that’s rare in XC spikes, while still feeling light and responsive for faster efforts.

The thicker sole can feel a little unstable on very hard, uneven ground, so it’s best on drier courses or those with paved sections. It tends to run small (size up), but it’s generally wider than Nike spikes. The Crescendo XC 2 is lighter with a lower-profile design than the original.

Who it’s for: runners new to spikes, or anyone who prefers more cushioning underfoot.
